this is the new version of my map, ƒoolishness, designed specifically for netplay. to use it, name it map and drop it in the same folder as marathon (no, you don't want to replace your old map). as of 6/15/95 (today) it has not been extensively tested (i haven't found a net setup suitable yet, or rather, haven't played in the one i've found), but i know none of the levels crash anything from my one-player playtesting… i hope…
the levels:
heaven & hell
the first level i designed (at least, that's still around in any form), it's a little crude (full 1024x1024 blocks for doors, long, open rooms). the theme should be rather obvious after playing for only a moment or two, so i won't get into it. look out for igor, the big guy downstairs, and raoul, the hunter in the hidden passage off of the hidden stairwell (most secrets are just about this deep in my levels…).
the original Marathon
sort of a novelty map i made one day while i was bored and taking a break from heaven & hell… very straightforward with an obvious theme (that is, if you know anything of Greek history, but then, the story is in the back of the marathon manual…) it's only still here because i enjoy it soo-ooo-ooooo much (haven't done it networked yet, though… that ought to be a blast…) no secrets here (sorry, just a basic room)…
a typical net level
though it ended up being far from typical, this still ought to be fun to play (like i said, haven't tested it much yet). it includes a random teleporter (something mentioned on a.g.m quite a while ago) and a (hidden) arena room with some nasty aliens in it… igor and raoul are both back, and raoul brought some friends.
cream of marine
the reason for the title of this level will become readily apparent when one hits the main large room… the first level that i'm content looks "professional" in this map (i'm working on a one-player that should be ready, oh, i don't know, in september, and what of it there is looks pretty nice). lots of hidden stuff in here, including not one, but two sniping ledges in the cream room. i'm not sure why, but the bobs and pfhor seem to congregate in the spiffy stairs room… weird. oh, look out for igor's reappearence (in a hidden room), a first appearence for Unferth the Invisible, and a way to get to the demon fuzz (my net-play group's name for invincibility), SPNKR, and alien weapon.
pfhunky arena
this level incorporates the nearest i can come to a bridge without the ceiling texture going all trippy. it's a lot of fun in a net game (i actually played here), especially when the big fellas show up (there can be two at the same time). several secrets, including a very involved way to get outside the ship to become demon-fuzzy (you will hate me for the way i hid it).
boxing arena
i built this level specifically for a couple of friends and i who like to fight fist-only games, but i thought some of you might be interested in the same kind of thing, so i didn't delete in this post version (i was considering it). there is one secret, relatively obvious if you've played the game at all - a 2x (i think) recharge.
stare at the stairs
not yet completed, this is a challenge to myself to see how little room i can take up on the map and still use all my polys (just kidding). it probably isn't ready for netplay yet, but it looks pretty and shows you (some) of where i'm going.
notes
this map is far from the way i'd like it, so here's a few things that (i think) are wrong with it / need (i want) to be added:
•alien recharge rate in the earlier levels isn't right - they don't come back soon or
often enough - you will run out (i know about this
•a checkerboard floor (you'll see when i do it, probably in stare)
•a faq with all the secrets (then again, there are map editors…)
•anything you think i ought to do! (within reason) - email me!
legal and my concious stuff:
•marathon is a trademark (or something) of bungie corp.
•this map was made exclusively with Pfhorte by Steve Israelson, versions 1.0d5 (maybe
earlier) through 1.0d17 (it's been long work)
•this is my map, thus you may not modify it nor this text file. moreover, you may not
upload it anywhere unless this file stays with it, in which case you may put it anywhere
you like.
